Want to Move Abroad? Start here!
As a 50-something woman who uprooted her life in the US to start anew in Portugal, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges and triumphs. This video is a glimpse into my journey and some reflections on taking life-changing risks.
Deciding to move abroad was not easy. I had tons of reservations and, admittedly, I didn't plan very well. The idea of leaving behind the familiar comforts of home and stepping into the unknown was daunting. I sold everything I owned, rented out my home, and started pet sitting across the US, the UK, and Portugal while waiting for my visa approval. This phase lasted almost six months, during which I faced a whirlwind of emotions and uncertainties.
The journey was fraught with challenges. With no family to lean on, making this decision felt even more difficult. The bureaucratic hurdles in Portugal seemed overwhelming, and the infamous visa "no man's land" tested my patience. Despite these obstacles, I pushed through, knowing I couldn't go back to the US and my home.
Despite the rocky start, the rewards of this move have been immense. One of the most significant benefits has been achieving financial stability. After 40 years of financial struggles, I finally have savings. Living in a small apartment, having no car, and trimming my budget in every possible way have allowed me to save money and experience peace of mind I never thought possible. This newfound financial stability has had a profound impact on my mental health.
This journey has taught me valuable lessons about resilience and adaptability. I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty and find joy in the little things, like spending an hour at a café or exploring new hiking trails. The experience has also reinforced the importance of taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone.
I'm also going to be documenting all the changes that I go through with my Youtube, weekly Substack newsletter and TikTok accounts. Please go over and follow or subscribe if you aren't already to see what I'm up to .
To anyone contemplating a significant life change -Why haven’t you done it yet? Take the time to explore your fears and push through them, even if your plans seem crazy. You only regret the things you don’t do. Embrace the unknown, and you might find rewards beyond your imagination.
As for the future, I don’t have all the answers. I didn’t foresee the last two years leading me to Portugal, and I’m not sure where I’ll end up next. But that’s part of the adventure. I invite you to follow me on this journey, and together, we’ll see where life takes us.
Thank you for being part of my story. Stay tuned for more updates and reflections on this ever-evolving journey.
